Life Lessons Learned #1

You know how there are some movies that people talk about and refer to over and over? Well, sometimes its good to actually watch one of those movies if you never have.
That's why I checked out Steel Magnolias from the library.

And I learned that it is the saddest darn show ever.

So maybe sometimes its good to not watch those shows people talk about.

Here are some things that the movie made me think about:
  • Wouldn't it be fun to have Dolly Parton do your hair? for real. Is she that nice in real life. She seems real nice.
  • I would like to visit the South.
  • Isn't Olympia Dukakis a lovely name? It's absolutely delicious to say. If that name were a food it would be pineapple curry.
  • It would be awesome to be a rich old lady.
  • I'm not a fan of death. Not at all.
  • I'm not that into sad movies. Are you supposed to want to watch something like that again?
  • I think that having a strong group of friends is really important in life. And the more things you go through together, the better friends you become.
  • But I think that even though I've never had big hair, it might be fun to have really big hair for just a minute. I mean really big hair.
And that's what I learned from Steel Magnolias.

I like that movie...
sometimes I feel like my salon on the farm is a little like that.
Only, I'm not Dolly ;-)

I saw it when I was in college and I felt exactly how you did, WORD FOR WORD. Your list is completely mine. I thought it was a great movie... AND I never wanted to see it ever again.

As far as the big hair, I gave it my best shot in the 80s when I was in high school, and I have to say, it WAS pretty fun.

I just realized that I don't think I've ever seen the entire movie. I need to put it on my list the next time Adam goes out of town!

Yeah. I didn't watch it again. There's a salon in Runaway Bride, too - and I liked that one a WHOLE lot better.

That movie is in my top 3 of ALL TIME!! LOVE it! The biggest reason is because of the friendships- I hope to have friends like that FOREVER!

I've never made it through the whole thing...but my all time favorite Dolly Parton quote is (not in the movie):

"Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

I think I'll be trying to do this for the rest of my life, but at the same time some of the moments where I've learned the most about who I am have been at the times when it was a total fluke!

I agree on the BIG hair....mines to long to get any sort of volume :(

Oh, I remembered one more good one:

“Storms make trees take deeper roots.”

Who knew Dolly was such a deep wealth of knowledge ;D

Just call me Weezer. Except my hair is big. Waaaay big. And I like it!

(I have, actually, called someone "a boil on the butt of humanity". It's just so evocative, don't you think? You don't hear good imagery like that every day.)

Any time you want to come visit the south, honey, you just let me know. We'll take you to DollyWood so you can see how hospitable she really is! (I'm not kidding. It's awesome.)

And . . . I'm posting something tomorrow just for you. Seriously. It's a repost but, my goodness, you are so going to get it.

Wow! I have missed you. Thanks for coming back. Phew. Steel Magnolias made be bawl my eyes out. Yes, it was sad. But, I also cried good and plenty when I watched her hack up that red velvet armadillo cake. I really should make one of those.

Watching chick flicks is like sticking your finger down your throat so you can enjoy the physical thrill of vomiting. I wouldn't deny the privilege to others, but it's just not my thing. I feel the same way about amusement parks - don't get me started - but that doesn't mean my life is devoid of thrills. They come to me in other ways.

Steel Magnolias is just like Fried Green Tomatoes. Every woman should see it once but they doesn't really need more than one viewing. ;)

Ok I am going to admit right now that I read your blog randomly when I see it update on either my sister in-law Camille's site or Camille Koberstein's site. Well goodness our in-laws are neighbors and all so it can't be too stalkerly right? Anyway I think you should be Dolly for Halloween now that you want big hair!

So I have been to Alabama. They are all way way nice, but I had such a hard time understanding them. Is that sad? Their accents down there are so thick! But then again I thought they probably couldn't understand me because everyone tells me I have a "Wyomin'" accent from where I grew up.

Oh my goodness...so glad you're back! I love your list and I love Dolly's quotes from this movie. I just watched it night before last as a matter of fact :)

I absolutely LOVE Steel Magnolias.

It reminds me of the more simple times in my life. It is one of those movies you can watch over and over and see things that you haven't remembered seeing before.

I think I will be watching it this weekend!! Thanks for the idea!!

I have never seen it- but it sounds like I never will. I don't like sad movies either. But I do like Dolly. Not her chest- that is annoying- but it is her personality. Maybe it is just the character she plays in all the movies- fun, happy, caring...

I also agree about the friends. And more I get to know you and the more memories we have together, the cooler I think you are! And I would say we are better friends :)

I want big hair too... Maybe we could do that as a mutual activity...
