I Love My Mother Because.... by Me

My mom likes life. She doesn't dwell on negative stuff, even though she's had to deal with her fair share of it. She cares about people and loves things. She collects lots of things: dishes, nativities, fabric, books, talavera, children's toys (she probably doesn't think she collects these, but she has amassed a bajillion of them), and other entertainments. She has good taste in things. She doesn't like Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow; she likes The Doors and has a crush on Joe Cocker. She knows all the best places for Mexican food and makes the worlds best fajitas herself. She is always willing to help--by watching a kid, fixing a meal,  lending an ear, whatever. And she's funny. I mean really funny.

I can't thank her enough for putting up with me. The older my Maggie gets and the more fits she throws over every little thing, the more I realize my mother is a Saint, because I was just like Maggie when I was a kid and my mom didn't kill me, not even once, even though I'm sure she wanted to.  My mom has answered many a phone call with me crying on the other end, and she's always put me back together again.

I love my mother because she's the best one there is.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!!

And I concur.

Your mom sounds so stinking cool! I would like to meet her based simply on your description. I bet she'd have me cracking up.

She is NOT ----THE----best Mama. Because I had one of those. I mean, she's okay. And yeah, she's funny - but I swear that's genetic, because look at YOU. You and those other people who grew up in your house. Funny did not come from your father's side, although I will admit, he does have his moments. Still, all of that said, I was never, in any way, in any incarnation, as cool and mysterious and Haight Ashbury as that picture of your mom is. Blond and bouncy (NOT CHEERLEADERY) was me. Purple hound tooth bell bottoms - really wide ones. No alleys in my history. So she wins. And she better not have a crush on Joe Cocker. She's married.

I always love being with her. In some ways she very much reminds me of my mom - they were just born a generation apart. Her warmth and humor makes me feel at home even when I am very far from it. She is wonderful. Happy mother's day to you both!

My father allows the crush on Joe Cocker, because really my dad knows he's much better looking than Mr. Cocker. And the humor comes from Dad's side, too. He's a different person at home than he is to the public. My grandfather and his brothers were famous for their wit, he passed that on to my dad and his brothers, Sunday evenings at grandma's were always full of good humor.

First, I love this post about your amazing mom. I LOVE being around her because she ALWAYS brings me UP. And I always feel like I have truly accomplished something if I make her laugh because THE WOMAN KNOWS FUNNY! She is SO hilarious! (And I didn't know she collects nativities... me, too!)

Second, I this description you just wrote of your dad "He's a different person at home than he is to the public" could have been written about MY dad!! I guess it surprised me because I've only see the "at home" version of your dad. I remember being in MY dad's 7th grade English class and seeing the "public" version of my dad and thinking that it was so weird... (Not that HE was weird, just that it was weird that he didn't act like.... DAD.) Anyway, I'm just SO NOT surprised that they're so similar! :)

Megs- I have to agree, you've got one great Mom - and look at how foxy she is in the picture you posted! She hasn't aged a day since! I love you Meridee!!!

Jen, it's so true! Our dads are very similar. When your parents first moved to Provo, Joel and I went to see their new place and your dad's jokes and mannerisms and everything was just like our dad. We were blown away and laughing so hard about it. Peas in a pod.

When you are bishop, I don't think they allow you to be funny. There's just something - un-solemn about wit.

Growing up, your Mom was the funniest adult I had ever met. I remember laughing and laughing at things she would say. And I also remember her laugh. It is very contagious. She's so awesome. And I have to say that it's true, "the apple DOESN'T fall far from the tree!"

I have never seen that picture of your mom before--what a great photo!! Yes, your mom is way cool. I remember growing up and visiting with all of the Utah family and listening to the grown-ups laughing and laughing. I ALWAYS looked forward to what your mom had to say!!
