Hungary

Tomorrow night I'm giving a culture presentation about Hungary (where I lived as a missionary for my church). I've been asked to tell the youth at church about the culture, food, people, etc. How on earth will I sum it up in 8 minutes? Last night I looked at a Hungarian postcard from one of my friends and I started to cry. I miss Hungary so much.

Also, I thought I'd whip up some Hungarian food for the kids to try. Only problem is figuring out what to make. Too many favorites. And they all take 2-3 hours. And I'm out of {vegeta}.

I think that Heaven will be full of Hungarians. And we'll all sit around eating gulyas, paprikas csirke, and {turo rudis}.  Yep, that will be heaven.

P.S. if you've never eaten Hungarian food, you really need to. Really.

is goulash really hungarian? I've always wondered.

oh - before I forget... I was at Heartland today and get this -- they had papier mache CUPCAKE boxes! so cute. The top comes off and it is more like an over-sized cupcake, but still fits in your hand. anyway, I thought of you when I saw those!

I'm afraid of unfamiliar spices. What's Hungarian food LIKE? And don't tell me you can't whip up some kind of description. Hot? Not? Veg based? Do they use cheese? Newish cheese? Or oldish, smelly cheese? What kind of meat do they use? How do they cook their veg? What spices do they use? Does their food smell like old sneakers (Indian food)? I wanna know.

Oh - and I want to know about goulash, too. My mom used to make it and I loved it.

I swear, those mission experiences are just imprinted the deepest parts of your soul for eternity. They are just there forever, and they will always make you cry. We're having a missionary YM/YW activity tonight, and all the kids got "calls" in the mail. Preston is "going to" Costa Rica ("it is anticipated that you will serve for two hours," it said), and I almost bawled. I know it's not a real call. I know he's not really going to Costa Rica. I know he's going to whine when I try to get him to put on a tie tonight. But I almost cried, and I ran and got my mission scrapbook (which he's seen 50 times) and pulled out my call and talked about how awesome everything is, and he's like - "Mom, you don't have to, really." Anyway, that is way too long a story... Suffice it to say I would L-O-V-E to be there to hear you talk about Hungary, and to sit and quietly sympathize about how impossible it is to try to summarize 18 months' worth of AMAZING experiences in 8 minutes...

If their chocolate tastes anything like the chocolate Brian brings back from Germany then I'll try it. :D The hungarian food I mean.

I don't know what any of that food is...but the way you explain it makes me want to have some.

Heaven to me is cheesecake, hot chocolate, and enough time to just take my time and relish each bite and sip. But I guess maybe if I tried Hungarian food maybe that'd change?
