"U" must know "Y" football around here is great

After a season in the bleachers at Rice Eccles and a lifetime cheering the cougs in Provo, I now consider myself somewhat of an expert on football in our region. I have compiled this list of all the things that make the Runnin' Utes and the mighty Cougars just a little bit different from one another.

  • At BYU games, you see clean and happy Mormon boys and girls wearing "Fully Invested" T-shirts and sipping these:

  • At Utah games, you see not-so-much-active Mormon boys and girls wearing "Fully Intoxicated" T-shirts [I'm not kidding here, thats what the shirts said... I couldn't get a good picture of the drunkards... they were swaying too much] and sipping these that they smuggled in somehow:

  • At BYU games the air is filled with the cougar fight song, lots of rah-rah-rahs, and yells directed at the refs using words like "Heck!" and "Freak!"

  • At the U games the air is filled with words Maggie is not allowed to learn and the drunken slurs of students trying to sing "Utah Man" when in reality only about 5 people in the stadium know more than just the chorus.

  • In Rice Eccles everyone is wearing red, black, and white. Everyone. And their dog. And if it gets cold, everyone pulls out their Ute blankets and their Ute coats, and their Ute beanies. Wearing a color other than red will earn you stares and invitations to leave. And don't even think about wearing blue. Seriously.

  • At LaVell Edward's Stadium everyone is wearing what they are wearing. Freshmen are wearing their cool new BYU garb but everyone else is pretty much just wearing what they were wearing when they decided to go to the game: green, gray, orange, or even (heaven forbid) red. Bronco's making effort to change that. We'll see.

  • Both BYU and Utah have pretty good looking coaches. But Bronco is way hotter. Sorry, Kyle.
  • But back when Urban was around...he definitely won the contest. He's the hottest coach in the NCAA by far.

  • Sorry, Cougars, we aint got nothin' compared to this:
  • In Rice Eccles Stadium just as the 4th quarter is starting the entire MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section) starts chanting "Crazy Lady." The band begins to play a tune called "Bubbles" and a woman that I have recently become obsessed with begins to dance. This is dancing that most closely resembles a Cougarette having muscle spasms. There is lots of flailing, shimmying, and running in place. Its really one of the best things I have seen in my entire life. She's famous. I got these pictures from the Tribune. She's been doing it for years, and I've infomed my husband I'll be taking over for her after she dies (or gets arthritis).

Alright, I confess! Maybe I spend more time crowd watching than following the game's every play (Maggie helps with that I assure you). I just had to concede to that before someone mentioned that my list had a serious lack of game statistics and conference hoop-la. But one thing is for sure: there are things about both BYU and Utah that I adore. The Crazy Lady makes me want to have season tickets at the U for the rest of my life but just singing the BYU fight song fills me with endorphins. And so it is, I'm a mixed up cougar with a die-hard Ute husband. But I still bleed blue.

Good luck on Saturday Cougars! Let's win it again.

Haha I loved reading this! How fun that you still get to go to so many football games. I had season tickets for all my years at BYU and it made me miss going to the games so much! I'm proud to be a Cougar! Oh, and I'm totally with you about the crowd watching...I love the games, but somehow it is kind of hard for me to pay attention to every single play!

I will have to have Bret read this, he is SO die-hard cougar. He will love your synopsis of the differences. He could add lots of other things to the list as well. we are having a game party here on Saturday, it will be a mixed crowd of Ute and Cougar fans...hope we don't lose any friends over this one! GO COUGARS!!!!!

That was awesome video! I swear my heart was pumping when I watched just like it did back in the day. My brothers are totally obsessed. My brother David listed that play as one of the highlights of his year at out family reunion. We cant get the games here so we just listen online when we can, so I guess I need to work on bleeding more blue then I do. The serious question is when they play each other who will you cheer for?

OH mY GOSH!!! I just got chills and chills and MORE chills! I JUST shaved my legs and you know how when you get hard chills after doing that it doesn't even feel like you shaved?? YEAH. That's me right now!! And p.s. I took a double take at those "really cute BYU fans" at the begining! I was like, "aw, we're so cute..." and then realized...'HEY! We're on Megan's blog!' We are VERY flattered. lol. This BYU vs. UT is the cutest thing EVER! We are such dyhard BYU fans its rediulous. Seth me and my dad went to a BYU vs UNLV game last season and my poor dad and hubby almost got beat up by these guys i had gotten into it with! We have made it a point to try and stay away from huge rival games so that our lives arent taken. :) You are so awesome, and that game last year was beyond the most exciting play i have EVER seen! Seth and i have watched nearly ALL the college/(some NFL) football games this season and have seen some pretty amazing plays (especially by the Patriots!) BUT NOTHING ever has compared even CLOSE to that winning play in 2006. We were at my brother's house and i swore the floor almost caved in and the walls physically SHOOOOK! Anyway...ok, i have gotten very carried away here, football is one thing i must say i'm in love with slightly less than my husband! :) You rock Megan..you ROCK.
GO COUGS!!!
p.s. we NEED a crazy lady for our cougs! I love that!

What?!? Fully intoxicated? You know what I say to that? #@#$%@#$
Just kidding, sorry, some U-ness must have rubbed off on me reading that post.
My mom better not read this. You know she already has a terrible opinion of the U and this is not going to help! Oh well, maybe the crazy lady will help. And by the way, if anybody could fill her shoes it would be you my Megan.
Just don't let too much of that U-ness rub off on the Magster, ok? And GO BYU on saturday!! GO!!!

(oh yeah, and don't forget we really have to hate the U now since they didn't let Kris into their stupid hospital program. Bah!!)

Hi Megan! I am so glad you found me....your daughter is adorable! This is Kenzie (Davis), by the way. You look like you are doing great and your posts are enthralling! I wish I was as good at this blog thing as you are...I am terrible. Anyway Ashlen is calling me in her get here now or I'll die voice so I better go!

I love that clip. We watch is regularly. And your list is pretty great too. I'll have to have Marcus read it. He doesn't believe football is a social event, it's business. So the dancing lady will give Utah no extra points. We're excited for the game. Wahoo! GO COUGS!

Steve and I just read your post and laughed and laughed. I want to go to a Utah game just so I can see the crazy lady! Holy cow, that's hilarious! You should take over for her- that would be awesome. You could do it too. GO COUGS! (PS we're really hoping we can find someway to watch the game--it's killing us being out here in Missoura!)

Yeah, well - Guy's father was a Ute, which says it ALL for me! I will die blue, even if I don't know all the words to the fight song. And to think Brigham started both schools. Go figure. You have your Esau who takes off on his own little program, and your Isaac, who sat home making potage or whatever, and working out little deals with his mom. Hmmmm. Maybe we've got some work to do on both sides . . .

Awesome!!!! Ammon and I laughed our heads off...that was great! Great comparisons and everything. Thanks for a good laugh and some entertainment! We bleed blue too!

Were you at the game yesterday? It was insane!!! But I can handle insanely close games if BYU wins.
Max celebrated by falling face down on the hardwood floor and having to get 3 stitches in his chin in the ER. yay....

You are so funny! Go COURGARS! 10-17. It was an awesome game... hope Dan is doing o.k. :) It is truly a great rivalry!

Well my friend, as soon as someone posts it on youtube, you will have another wonderful video to link to--something about 4th and 18! I loved the post. I can't believe there are such things as the "Fully Intoxicated" t-shirts. Are they really proud that they are losing so many brain cells?
