Thinking

Tonight I watched {"Steal a Pencil For Me"} on Hulu. On Thursday I finished reading my library book {"Someone Named Eva"}

Both of these works have left me with a lot to wrap my head around. I don't think I will ever understand how people could ever be so cruel to one another. Or how anyone could conceive of such horrible plans and how others could go along with them.

I will also never understand the amazing capacity that human spirits have to survive and overcome and even to grow under such circumstances. Becoming a mother has added a whole new dimension and appreciation and sense of awe to my perspective on the holocaust.

I recommend both the book and the movie. I don't know that I can say I enjoyed them (how can one possibly enjoy such things?) but I am grateful for them and the thoughts they've led me to have this week.

I read someone named Eva just last year--I couldn't stop thinking about it either. I had no idea that kind of thing even happened. It's quite a story.

My dads side of the family are Jewish. They are survivors and they truly are amazing people.

I just watched the first 5 minutes of "Steal a Pencil," and it looks so good! I know what you mean--I "almost" read a series called The Zion Covenant. It begins in Vienna (book 1 is "Vienna Prelude"), and I honestly couldn't bring myself to finish the last book because of the immense cruelty that had run through the whole series. It wasn't overly graphic, it was just realistic.. Those things really happened to the Jews in Europe at the time. I just can't handle how unspeakably awful people were, and how people were treated, but at the same time, the strength of the human spirit was overwhelmingly inspiring. I do think that being a mother made me even more sensitive than I would have otherwise been. I remember I was nursing my youngest while I was reading this series, and I really think THAT (nursing my baby) was what made reading those things too much for me to handle! I will have to watch the rest of "Pencil." It looks so inspiring!
