Maybe Maggie's Right

http://www.russpage.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/rivalry_byu_vs_utah.jpg

While traveling home from sisters in law Jill and Jennie's birthday party (happy birthday, girls), I entertained Maggie by singing some favorite songs. With the upcoming holiday I busted out my kindergarten repertoire and sang Guffy the Goofy Gobbler, The Pilgrims and the Indians, and Five Little Turkeys. Then I issued the challenge.

"Maggie," I said, "Listen to Mommy sing her song, then listen to Daddy sing his song, and then pick which one you like best."

"K," she said.

I geared up for the BYU fight song. Dan helped me start with a rousing "Rise and Shout!" then I sang my little heart out all the way to the "Rah Rah Rahs" at the end!

Dan was next with Utah Man. Bless his heart he has an amazing singing voice but doesn't know the words to ANY song. I had to fill in words for him as he sang, "So fill your lungs, and sing it out, and shout it to the sky..." But he finished with a rousing "Go Utes!" that even made me (a die hard cougar fan) feel a rush of excitement. [And folks, its only my love of fight songs as a genre that lead me to learn all the words to Utah Man, nothing more. And I guess it make the time pass between plays at the games.]

Thinking that we'd really given Maggie a show I turned around to face Mags in the back seat. "So, Magger, which one did you like best? Mommy's pretty song? or Daddy's?" I asked.

All she did was vigorously shake her head and shout, "Uh uh."

So, there you have it. Maggie didn't declare a winner. Or maybe she just declared us both losers. I blame her father's influence.

No no no. You've got it all wrong. She voted for you! Trust me sista. I know baby jargon. I've been interpreting it for years and what "sounded" like Uh huh was actually Ruh Ruh only R's are hard for little kids to say so it came out Uh uh which was actually Rah Rah!

You'll sleep better tonight knowing this and so will the twins I'm sure......as long as Dan doesn't get all jealous and start pinching them in the night so you have to get up and take care of them....that would be SO like a Ute wouldn't it......

I have to say that Maggie's smart. She knows better than to get in the middle of this kind of thing! I'd have a hard time saying the winner myself if I was there probably, and I'd rather fall off a cliff than watch the Utes win!! :)

that is too funny! perhaps she feared what might happen to her christmas gifts if she chose the "wrong" parent...

I'm writing because it seems your other friends have it wrong, Mag's voted for Dan! She knows the Utes are undefeated and she also knows about the big game this weekend. We've talked and trust me Meg, Maggie wants to go to the U, she wants to be part of the MUSS and she loves the dancing lady!

Have fun listening to Dan sing the Utah fight song because Utah is going to kick BYU's trash this Saturday, and I will be there to witness it!

I'm a Cougars fan, and will be to the end. But I have to say that I'm very nervous about this upcoming BYU v. Utah game -- and this post just reminded me of the soon approaching game. My stomach is doing flips and I'm just NOT looking forward to it. I love you Cougars, but if you pull this one off, I'll be floored. AH...this post really has done a number on my nerves!:)

Girl, you do collect a range of buddies - Obamites, McCainers, Cougs and Utards. Nothing controversial here. And now, look what you are doing to your daughter - making her choose sides. Garr!! Maggie was wise. And if she keeps wise, she's gonna keep her own counsel. At least till the game is over -

I thought this forum was fair and balanced. But I see that some of us will have to agree to disagree.

GO UTES!!!! My score prediction: 23-14

No Dan, it is far and balanced.

And I'm with Megs again on this one.
