Chili Cook-Off

My in-laws, the lovely Hinckleys always make me nervous with their mad cooking skills. I mean seriously, where else on earth are there 4 sisters and a talented mother all busily dancing around the kitchen baking bread, pizzas, and roasts, while they mash potatoes, toss salads, and blend a smoothie. All on a weeknight? I tell you what! They can cook. All of them. And then there is me. I made hot dogs on our George Foreman grill for Dan's first meal in our home as a married man and I really was proud of myself. Lame. I've gotten better. I really have. But I'm not Hinckley caliber. Not yet.

So, when the Hinckley Halloween Party invitation came, and said there was going to be a chili competition I got sweaty palms. When I make chili I open up a can of Stagg's. Lucky for me, Dan was all over it. But being the experimental engineer he is, maybe I should have stayed in the kitchen to reign in his creativity.

I ate a big bowl of it at the party then I asked what he'd put in it. He named off the ingredients:
  • a couple of cans of pinto beans
  • a can of green chilies
  • stew meat
  • onions
  • bacon
  • cumin
  • chili powder
  • taco seasoning
  • pepper
All normal, right? Not. The secret ingredients were:
  • a Hershey bar and
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • barbeque sauce (but I added that not knowing he had other secret ingredients)
It really was pretty good. Strange, but good. Jennie was the winner. Better luck next year, Dan!

A Hershey bar. Really? I'll have to try that next time I make chili, which is like, never. But it sounds interesting!
