Price(y) Birthday Parties

Maggie has been invited to several birthday parties for her classmates at school, where the whole class is invited to parties at the bowling alley or the wave pool. Seems kind of expensive to me, but I haven't really priced it out to see how bad the damage really is to the pocket book.

Anyway, I went along to chaperone Maggie at Maddix's party a couple of weeks ago. It was at the wave pool and a real live Power Ranger came. Maggie thought it was super cool even though she was too shy to go over and give him a high five with the other kids.

Pretty impressive. Its looking like the stakes are pretty high here as far as parties are concerned. And I thought my parties were good if they had cupcakes.

Do kids have big parties with the whole class invited where you live?

Wow! A real live Power Ranger. That must cost a pretty penny.

Yes, where we live there are a lot of kids who do the "invite the whole class" thing. I did look into it and it wouldn't be so bad if they just let you invite 3 kids, but often they have minimums (10 kids or more). No way.

The way I explained it to my kids when they considered doing a party like that is, "Okay, we have $100 to spend for your birthday. We can spend all of it at the pool party with 10 friends, OR we can use that $100 to buy you presents and have a party at home with your friends." And they have never considered the "outside" parties again.

Your parties ARE really good because they have cupcakes!! I'm serious. You do awesome parties! They're amazing. I honestly think that the parties where the mom does them are kind of refreshing to the kids. I mean, swimming or arcades or whatever are fun, but a HOME party with cupcakes and games is a nice change of pace these days. THAT'S what's special these days. My two cents. :)

Wow, All I have ever allowed is 4 or 5 kids at most. (Natasha did go over board on her 16th, which did not make me happy). Just simple little things. Once we did take a couple of Collin's friends lasar tagging. That was all we could afford. I say do what is in budget. Anything else is trying to keep up with the Jones'
