I'm Afraid of Grown-Ups

When I was a kid I was so afraid of adults that I used to run home from my friends houses whenever their fathers came home from work. I would watch for my friends to be outside before I went over to ask them to play for fear of their parents answering the door and having to talk to them. I can talk and make a fool of myself in front of kids, but if an adult enters the room I get all nervous and quiet.

And the sad thing: I realized that I'm still afraid of grown-ups, but now I am one. How's that for ironic?

dads were scary...but moms I often found myself ignoring my friends and chatting away with their mothers instead of playing with them. I think you have it right though. We should all be kids at heart!

OH MY GOSH! I WAS (AND AM) THE SAME WAY!!! That is hilarious.

On a semi-related note, my youngest thinks the word "adult" is actually "a dolt."

I still cannot accept the fact that I am an adult. Which is why I don't have kids and have to do fun things all of the time. I can't even accept the fact that all of these people younger than me have kids (multiple kids). I feel like I was just in high school yesterday.

You felt that way about me? Oh, my GOSH. Didn't you know I was really your age? That I'm still your age? I find grownups to be kind of boring, actually - and a little alarming. They are so into doing things the right way, they forget that "right" can be a stricture that shuts out the truth along with beauty and joy. I will die sitting on the floor.
