My Allowance

Talking about money stresses me out. I don't like it. Give me the money I can spend, and I'll make it work. Make me sit there and make a spreadsheet about it, and I'll fall apart.

Thus, Dan and I have an allowance system. Every month Dan gives me the grocery cash and the allowance cash (that I get to spend on me and the kids). Then I know what I can spend and we don't have to overanalyze it. It works brilliantly. Well, it did work brilliantly.

Then yesterday, Mr. Coin Collector (AKA Dan) handed me my allowance in 50 cent coins. I stared at him.

"I stopped by the bank on my lunch break and got your allowance. I went through them already and pulled out the good ones. You can spend the rest," he said.

"Really? I can spend the rest?" I asked.

"Well, yeah," he said.

"Where?" I asked. "Can you see me dumping this bag out on the counter at Target?"

He then admitted that he couldn't really picture me doing that, but it could be fun. Oh boy. What fun. Maybe this is his new way of getting me to stop shopping.

Holy crap I almost peed my pants laughing when I read that! Oh Dan... what a jokester!

Okay, I couldn't deal with that. I have to know every cent and the big picture and budget it out myself and be the gatekeeper. Target could probably use a bunch of fifty cent pieces. And I guess you could actually go into a bank and exchange them for bucks, eh?

ugh. The money discussion. Double ugh......

That is hysterical. Even if you were willing to cart it over to, say, Target, you'd need a small wheelbarrow--those things aren't light! P.S. I'd love to see his coin collection! I have one, too, but it's not very fancy.

I like that Dan. He reminds me of my (somewhat odd, but smart) older brother.

Aaarrgh! It's my brother in law! See? I told you. Fifty cent pieces, silver dollars......what's the difference?

Please Dan.....don't answer that question.......

I usually just think about what a great, funny guy Dan is. But then there's moments you share, like this one, where it dawns on me that he's prolo nuts.

That is so funny! haha! I remember one time Brad and I went to hardware ranch way up in the mountains. When we got there we REALLY wanted to go on a horse drawn carriage ride to look at the elk. Both of us forgot our wallets. We only needed 10 bucks- so we dug and dug around in our car and found the whole $10 in pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters! We seriouly had only five cents to spare. The cashier and the long line behind Brad got the biggest kick out of him paying in such a manner- the whole place was just laughing as brad pulled out handful after handful of coins out of his pockets! Good memories! I am sure your trip to target paying with quarters will be a great memory also- I can only imagine all three of your kids screaming for naps or a piece of candy at Target as you are fiddling around with change. I can just picture you emptying out your bag and half of it falling on the ground and your hands just shaking from the intense situation. I am kidding- good luck with that though! Dan is one funny man! Also- Tanya and I got our VTing done with visits---- except for my next door neighbor, of course. I hope your don't mind me reporting to you on your blog...

I'm loving the idea of an allowance. I need something like that too, since I've become a bad shopoholic. Not a good thing. But in $.50 coins? That's awesome...
