On Wednesday my mother and I went to visit the "grandsters." Grandma just loved and kissed on Cole while we tried to teach Grandpa how to use his
Comcast On Demand (for the umpteenth time, but it's pretty high tech). Then Mom broke out Gramp's old
B.Y. High yearbook and read all the messages aloud that his classmates had written decades ago. If I had a nickle for every "
you're just swell!" I think I'd be 20 bucks richer.
Grandpa was so handsome that his classmates elected him senior class president even though he'd only moved in a couple weeks before school started--they thought he looked like
Tyrone Power.
.
Now that's just swell.

Gotta tell you, though - and you'd find those kinds of phrases in your mom's book, if she bothered to buy one, counter culture woman as she was - year books are like an anthropologist's dream, the middens of the language. You can take the pulse of a society by what the kids write in these things. Which is why the books you guys brought home troubled me a little - the sarcasm, the back-handed expressions of affection - like, in our world, you can't be that innocent and open, you can't just say "You're swell." You have to say, "You stink and you were always a jerk. Call me."
I think I like the innocence better.
By the way - he DID look like Tyrone Power. But he's handsomer now.
That is Grandpa Ras? WOW! What a dream boat!
My Dad has some small books with my grandmother's life history. I very much want to take them and transcribe them and make them into books for my sister. All my grandparents are dead now and I never knew this particular grandmother, she died about 3 years before I was born. Treasure those moments, I am learning the value of having things writen by my ancestors!
swell...i LOVE that word! haha
That is a cool thing to be able to do--look through the old yearbook. Some day people will look back at blogs and laugh that I said "cool." "Swell" will come back in by then!
Hubba-hubba....
By the way it was just swell seeing you and your adorable kiddos today! We'll have to ensue more chaos soon...because I've got one more to add to the bunches!
It was super sweet that you and your Mom brought me a gift, I'm so excited to have more BOY things!
I can remember the first time I saw a picture of my grandmother when she was younger, "gasp, grandma, you were pretty back then!"
I'm surprised she didn't slap me.
Sorry, I'm new to this blog - I want to see a photo of your grandfather! Where is he?
Megan, do you remember a strange redhead that made bizarre faces the ENTIRE time you spent with her in Mexico?? That's me--Mexican sista'.
I went to the fantasy writing conference at BYU yesterday and introduced myself to Kristin Randle and begged her to get me information about you since I remembered you used to live by her.
I'm glad you are looking so happy.

Megan!!! We're finally "talking" after nine years and it just isn't enough. We need to know each others emails at least. Hmm. Maybe you're listed. I'll go look.
