Baby Must Haves

Last year my friend Vhari (who is a genius) did a series of posts highlighting the best baby/toddler supplies the world has to offer. Way helpful. Way.

So, now that I've been doing the baby thing non-stop for 2.5 years (and have successfully raised 3 children to the age of 7.25 months, one of them has been successfully raised beyond that age--thankfully) I just wanted to similarly share a few of the things that I have found to save my life.

1. Baby food Mill--when I started the boys on solids and realized that they were bottomless pits that would each consume 2-3 jars of babyfood per feeding (at 50 cents a jar--you do the math, okay I'll do the math, that's up to 6 bucks a day which is 42 bucks a week.) I realized something had to give. So I bought a baby food mill and I just grind up my own bananas, pears, strawberries, steamed carrots, baked sweet potatoes, peas, etc. It's brilliant. Sure it takes a little more planning than just opening a jar, but I think its kinda fun. And when they're ready for it we can just grind up whatever we're having for dinner--lasagna or spaghetti or chicken fajitas. Now I won't have to gag while looking at all of the stage 3 gerber foods  like "Beef Dinner" and "Spaghetti and meat sauce" I can just gag while looking at the ones I made myself.

2. Magic Erasers--So it finally happened. Maggie took a pen to the pantry door, and continued down the wall of the hallway. I called Beth to find out what could get it off since my windex and paper towel weren't cutting it and she let me in on the secret. Turns out Mr. Clean's Magic Erasers are the coolest things ever. They'll clean everything from your stovetop to your kid's crayon shenanigans. My favorite thing though is that it gets things off with like a quarter of the effort of anything else I've ever used.

3. Ohdeedoh--This blog is the bee's knees. It's seriously such a delight to look at and full of so many great ideas that my heart skips a beat when I see it on my google reader. I think I could look at their gorgeous nursery tours all day long.

4. Bumbo Chairs--I think these chairs are a must for multiples. I bought them so that I can sit the kids right in front of me for feedings and even use them in the shopping cart when I'm at Target. I don't know if the chairs would be as necessary for a singleton--but I think they're great.

ah yes. i must agree on most of these. but ya know, i made all my own baby food and i have that same food grinder...i used it about 3 times. it was much more convienent for me to use my good ole Vita Mix and make big batches of baby food, freeze them up, pop them in the microwave for a few seconds, and presto...you've got lunch for the wee babe. I thought the baby grinder...or food grinder that makes baby food, rather...was good for some stuff, but I hated cleaning it, and it just didn't make enough at a time for me. I guess I'm too lazy. But, I'm a HUGE supporter of making your own.

It's funny. I suppose it is with every generation as more and more baby products come out and those of us that are done say, "man, wish I'd had that when I was having kids!" I remember my mom saying the same thing as my sister's and I would buy baby stuff.

Josh's mom gave me the grinder with Logan and I absolutely loved it. I felt like I was saving money and he was able to eat a healthy variety of foods.

Thanks for the magic eraser tip. I thought I was going to have to repaint one spot on my wall. But I will try the eraser trick first.
