I lean left. This is not a surprise to many of you I am certain. Those of you who know my father's political tendencies or have ever read the slogan's on my little brother's t-shirts knew something democratic was going on with those Williamses. But recently, I've kind of kept my political ideology under the radar.
In high school my pal Hillary and I used to be in Beau Sorenson and Kenny Martin's faces telling them that their club of Young Republicans would never see Bob Dole take office (Turns out we were right. "Clinton/Gore got 4 more." I think that was our slogan.) I was loud and proud about it then but I realized I was definitely a Utah County minority. I found out in those days that telling folks your daddy was a Democrat was only good for shock value.
Nowadays, shock isn't exactly the reaction I'm after. So I mostly keep quiet. Even in one of my "multicultural education classes" at BYU (that is in quotes because the class was NOT about multicultural education as much as it was about "why the democratic party will lead you to Hell") I kept my yapper shut so as not to get into trouble with my professor. He did hand me one of my papers back and corner me to say "You really denied me the opportunity to see into your brain." I just replied, "Frankly, I didn't care to think about your article that much."
I mention my political beliefs to friends that I know won't bite my head off. But mostly I only really talk politics with my family. However, this week I came out to my in-laws. It was over Sunday dinner. During casual family conversation the well spread rumor about Barack Obama's radical Islamic upbringing came up. I sprung into action "dousing" the anti-Obama slander with a little too much factual "flame retardant". When I was finally finished my sister in law Megan said, "So, you're voting for Obama then, Megs?" I nodded, "Yeah, I guess I came out about that one." And you know what, it wasn't so bad.
So, now I'm telling you: Hi everybody, I'm voting for Barack Obama. And if you're not so keen on McCain, I'm thinking you should, too.

Murphy just said, "See? He's black." Like none of us knew that. He's accusing us of having laughed at him once when he made that observation before. But now it's true. We're laughing at him now. Mr. Obama seems like a very nice boy. Not sure he really knows how to drive a speedboat. But then, almost nobody who has driven the dang thing has ever really known how.
However, I must admit, although I am in Independent, I will probably vote Republican. Unless it's McCain. Then there wouldn't be a Republican to vote for, or so I am told.
But congratulations. I may not agree with your politics (then again, I may), but I do agree with your choice of parents.
I'm voting for Obama too. Let's hope he can beat McCain. I think I'll cry if McCain is elected. Hello Bush all over again.
Reason #6541239853135 I love Megan Williams Hinckley. She's a democrat.
I am proud of you for coming out! I am leaning towards Obama right now also!
I voted today. My name was on the voter listing twice, and someone said I should get to vote twice, then. One of the poll workers said, "That would be okay, as long as you vote for the RIGHT person." Then she saw that politically I was unafilliated and she shockingly looked up at me and said, "So, you're voting Democratic then?" I just smiled a Republican-friendly smile and said, "Yep!"
I know I'm in the minority NOT because I vote across party lines but simply because I'm not affiliated with the Republican party. Today, only being able to vote for a Republican candidate if I was affiliated with the Republican party reminded me of a character in "The Book Thief", who joins the Nazi party just to escape ostracism; just to be within the social norm. Why should Republicans get to vote for both a Republican and a Democratic candidate while everyone else, unless they join the Republican ranks, has only the choice to vote for a Democratic candidate?
P.S. On Sunday when I was at my family's party I was telling Amy about that funny Hillary Clinton Cookies video, so then people started saying how they don't like Hillary (she's not my favorite, either) and then my mom came up with this gem, that she says my brother Cody told her: that Barak Obama smokes weed once a week. I tried to explain that actually it was that he admitted that in college he DID inhale a marijuana joint (I don't have the specifics on frequency - obviously I'm not the most politically informed, but...). But she wouldn't be swayed. She said he smokes weed once a week.
Ohh, dare I post a comment among these supporters of Obama (who is a better choice in my opinion than Clinton)? Especially right after my sister who firmly supports the previous posts?! I am a bit scared to tred over the lines of politics. Here I go:I am a strong supporter of Mitt Romney. My husband has volunteered at his Provo campaigne office making phone calls. We have diligently watched all of the debates and had several discussions about them. I am not sure what I'll do if McCain receives the nomination because I don't like him at all - personally or professionally.
Sorry to break the thread of support.
Go Megan!!!! In this State it does take a lot of courage to say your the "D" word. Oh, and on a totally different note Ari had her baby boy! Mo is 8lbs. 3oz. and 20.5inches long! Big Boy! She is doing great and so is he...he came yesterday at 5:05pm, we are all so excited, there are no more pregnant people left in our family it's weird!
Oh, and I forgot, if you want to see pictures I have some up on my blog!
Hey, does this mean I am uninvited from coming to Swiss Days?
I'm still torn between obama and mitt...leaning towards obama
Tia, you can still come. But you did get demoted to the back seat. Sorry. Dema-cats only up to the front. Kidding dearest. You're still one of us. And Romney is a good fella. My own husband voted for him.
I don't like them Democrats. I don't like their attitude.
Megan, I too lean more to the Democratic side. I really have hard time saying I am Democrat or Republican I have isues with both sides. One election when people found out I had voted for Gore over Bush people looked at me like I was blue with snakes coming out of my ears.
Uh, Megs, just so you know, we already knew you were a democrat. After all, that t-shirt you bought for Cam was delivered to our house labeled with my name so I opened it and immediately knew it wasn't mine, but wasn't that shocked to see it. Besides. . . I really don't care. I'm an independent.
Oh, and by the way. . . I meant that I really don't care that you're a democrat. Not that I don't care about your political views. They are very important. So in other words, we care about you, not about politics. That still doesn't make sense. . .
I knew it!!!!! You rebel democrat in sure fire republican territory! :o) My childhood was the same but on the other side. In Cali I was one of the only Republicans. We'd have these debates in my government class and we'd have to divide with which party we supported and then go at it. I'd be the only one on the Republican side so I had to take on my whole class by myself. And that class basically taught that if your are a democrat you will go to a very earth friendly, non-racial celestial-though non denominational heaven and if you were Republican you'd be off to good old fashion HELL. However, I did sport an anti Iraq war button on my back pack.:o) So maybe we can still be friends! :o)
PS welcome back to the blogging world! We missed you!
I suppose on top of being the trunk rider, I'll have to carry all of the bags and wait in the car while train burgers and chocolate dipped strawberry shakes are being devoured. :)
AAHHH! I knew there was something different about you...
I am an independent due to my paralyzing fear of commitment. And honestly, I have a hard time understanding politics and feeling like I know what a candidate is really like and what he/she will be like in office. Therefore, I am going to base my vote this year on who is the best public speaker. I'm a bit tired of having a president who looks ridiculous every time he stands at a podium. Based on that alone, I will NOT vote for McCain! I like Romney because he's eloquent and keeps his cool and is quick on his feet and sounds intelligent. I feel the same about Obama. He's a great speaker and very 'inspiring'. Clinton speaks too slowly and sounds like a robot. So, if it ends up a contest between Clinton and McCain...I'm moving to Canada.
Marielle
oh I have so many (good) things to say about this post, but I'll leave it at just way to come out lady.
So glad you're still with me on this sort of thing, this is my favorite time of year!
