Life Lessons Learned #3

Children remember things. Its pretty amazing. They won't remember that you told them two seconds ago to put their shoes on or stop hitting their brother. But they will remember that toy they clutched to their chest 2 months ago at Walmart and how you said maybe they could get it for their birthday.

Maggie has been a pretty good shopping companion during the last year. She's been cooperative and obedient and rarely has shopping melt downs. The secret has been that every time she sees something she wants or loves she puts it back on the shelf and says "I get that my birthday!"

Problem: Her birthday is in 2 weeks. And she's thinking that those things she's been stock piling in her mind will appear at her birthday party.

We'll see how this goes...

Darn that child-memory! I'm glad that she has been a good shopping companion, though. That makes a HUGE difference. I don't think mine did that well so early. (Or maybe they did...that was a long time ago... I only remember hating taking them shopping.) As far as her birthday (and the stock pile), you could tell her that she is going to have LOTS of birthdays, so lots of chances to get all that stuff!! (Don't need to mention that the 16th thing on her list is going to fall off the list by her 16th birthday...)

I could have sworn i just saw a scooter and clearance at Target the other day. But then again i was kind of in a hurry and couldn't stop to check the price but maybe you might want to see.I think it was a princess one as well if that is what she is wanting.

It's that selective memory!

Kids DO have selective memory. One of my favorite quotes is by Erma Bombeck... I've got it on my sidebar. Let me copy and paste it here...

"Kids have little computer bodies with disks that store information. They remember who had to do the dishes the last time you had spaghetti, who lost the knob off the Tv set six years ago, who got punished for teasing the dog when he wasn't teasing the dog and who had to wear girls boots the last time it snowed."

I love it!

Ok...I was wondering if that was just scoty...but we are going through the same thing here too...an all by self train...whatever that is...he even asks to call grandma and tells her she needs to buy that for him for his birthday...does she have to do a count down to everything too?? I find Scoty in the garage looking in my Christmas decorations, cause he wants the train that goes around the christmas tree...so we have a count down to that too!!

Oh yes. I have been in this exact situation before. After her birthday, tell her she might get the things she didn't for her birthday for Christmas. Then when the same happens at Christmas, remind her about her birthday. It's so simple, yet so genius at the same time.

Perhaps what you do get her might knock some of that other stuff out of her head. On the other hand, probably not. Ha Ha - now YOU are the parent.
